Kate Kerr
Creative Director at Saaba Architects
Residential | Interiors | Bespoke Commercial

My career has been shaped by a deep interest in refined residential and commercial architecture, crafted interiors, and context-driven design that elevates everyday living.

Before establishing Saaba Architects, I worked with leading practices including Fearon Hay, Ponting Fitzgerald, Jasmax, and Piercy & Company (UK). During this time I led teams on projects ranging from bespoke luxury homes to complex commercial and cultural developments.

Today, through Saaba Architects, I partner with clients seeking thoughtful, contemporary design grounded in material richness, clarity, and craftsmanship.
Available to Mentor
I'd welcome the opportunity to share knowledge and experience with other architects at various career stages. This could include practical advice on navigating the registration process, career development strategies, or technical guidance on design and delivery challenges.
Looking For a Mentor
As director of an emerging practice, I'm looking to connect with established practitioners who've been through the journey of building and growing an architecture business. I'd welcome advice on the full spectrum - design processes, office systems, marketing approaches, and the practical realities of running a studio.

Showcase

Northland House

Set along a coastal ridgeline in Northland, this family retreat is organised around an L-shaped plan that frames expansive sea views while creating a sheltered courtyard protected from prevailing winds.

Settled into the slope of the land, the design balances openness to the horizon with a sense of enclosure - delivering both expansiveness and refuge.

A restrained palette of vertical timber, natural stone, and crafted timber joinery establishes a modern yet relaxed atmosphere. Subtle mid-century references layer in warmth and familiarity, while the home remains grounded in its coastal setting.

Every detail supports the desire for a comfortable, relaxed space where they can gather, play, and unwind together — a retreat that feels both timeless and personal.

Grey Lynn Renovation & Pool House

This heritage villa has been reimagined to enhance privacy, flow, and connection while respecting its historic character. A redesigned front entrance improves the home’s street presence with planting and a new garage, while the reconfigured layout introduces an internal stair to a new lower level with garage, bedroom, bathroom, and rumpus room.

At the rear, a refined pool house transforms how the generous backyard is used - providing both an extension of family living and a space for entertaining. Defined by large timber glazing and handmade brick cladding, it contrasts the villa’s heritage character. Inside, natural marble, tumbled limestone flooring, and plastered walls create a restrained yet warm atmosphere, where simplicity and natural materials bring a sense of calm.

538 K Road

This 11-storey mixed-use development regenerates a prominent K Road corner site into a landmark building.

The architectural strategy employs layered massing—a street-level podium respecting the precinct's 14m heritage datum, mid-level landscape terraces, and floating wintergarden structures that frame Karangahape Road and Gundry Street as crystalline edge conditions. A central tower with distinctive sawtooth roofline establishes the building as a gateway marker for the precinct.

The Mass timber design underpins ambitious sustainability credentials targeting 6 Green Star rating.

The facade composition - fine-grain glazing over expressed timber structure with varied fritting - and ground-level design elements including continuous verandahs and structural bays establish dialogue with K Road's heritage fabric while delivering contemporary urban scale and superior tenant experience.
