Julie Stout
I have practised architecture for 30 years in New Zealand, and for short periods in Hong Kong and Fiji. In 1989 I formed Mitchell and Stout Architects Ltd with David Mitchell. This company has four directors and an office in High St, Auckland.

My work has included urban planning and public buildings, master-planning for large mixed-use developments in New Zealand and China, multi-unit residential projects, educational buildings and individual houses. I have been involved in all aspects of these projects, dealing with a wide range of clients, and with all the issues of design, detailing and construction.

Notable work includes the New Gallery for Auckland City, Tauranga Art Gallery, the master-planning of restaurant and hotel buildings and public space at the Viaduct Basin in Auckland, and the Gardiner Building at Auckland Girls’ Grammar School.

Awards include NZIA Supreme Award for the NEW Gallery, two times winning Home Magazine’s much-contested ‘Home of the Year’- for houses in the King Country and on Waiheke Is.

Career highlight to date is being part of the ‘Last, Loneliest Loveliest’ Creative Team producing New Zealand’s first official pavilion at the 14th Venice Biennale of Architecture in June 2014.

Public Urban Issues

As Chair of the NZIA Auckland Urban Issues Group from 2002-2004, I was actively involved in lobbying Auckland Council to promote and plan a better built environment for Auckland City.

In 2005 I was appointed to the Auckland Mayor’s Urban Task Force on Urban Planning.

I am President of Urban Auckland, a pressure group of professionals with a record of significant planning influence.

Teaching

Since 2009 I have been a Professional Teaching Fellow in the design studios at the University of Auckland School of Architecture, engaged at an Associate Professor level.

I am currently Adjunct Professor at UNITEC Institute of Technology, Auckland.
